Afin de défier la toute puissance de l'empire de Jules César, Cléopâtre a décidé de construire, en seulement trois mois et en plein désert, un somptueux palais. La reine d'Egypte confie la lourde tache à l'un de ses meilleurs architectes : Numérobis. S'il réussit, elle le couvre d'or ; s'il échoue, il sera donné en pâture aux crocodiles du fleuve sacrée, le Nil. Conscient de l'infaisabilité du contrat, Numérobis va chercher l'aide de son ami Panoramix, druide «du village que nous connaissons bien». Avec l'aide de la potion magique, les travaux seront terminés à temps. Désirant éviter les crocodiles à son ami égyptien, Panoramix, escorté d'Astérix et d'Obélix, part pour l'Egypte. L'envieux Amonbofis, ennemi juré de Numérobis, fera cependant tout pour nos héros ne puissent accomplir leur mission. (Tired with Julius Caesar’s constant put downs about her people, Cleopatre, queen of Egypt, bets him that she can have built – in just three months – the most fabulous palace he has ever seen. To that end, she engages the avant-garde young architect Numérobis, promising him he will be covered in gold if he pulls of the challenge, or else become crocodile meat if he fails. Numérobis realises that his only hope of success is the magic potion invented by the Gaul druid Panoramix. He persuades the druid, and his friends Asterix and Obelix, to come to Egypt to help him in his mission impossible . However, a rival architect, Amonbofis, is determined that Numérobis will fail and is prepared to resort to any means to stop the building work, even allying himself with the Roman army...)
