It tells the story of a young man who , upon returning from military service is forced to confront the realities of his future and choose a direction in which to go. The film began production in 1959, during the De-Stalinization period of the Khrushchev thaw, when the society experienced several years of unprecedented freedom of speech. By the time the film was finished in 1961, the thaw was waning and the film's openly critical view of Stalinism was deemed unacceptable, as was the its portrayal of the lives of everyday Soviet youth worrying about money and jobs and listening to Western music. Censored and withheld, the film was finally released in 1965 in a truncated form of 90 minutes. Nearly 4 decades later , the film is available in its full format and becomes one of the very heart of the USSR cinematic thaw of the 1960s. Directed by Marlen Khutsiev.
