It took four years to complete and is an international co-production between Israel, Germany, and France. It deals with the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre in the 1982 Lebanon War. The film combines classical music, 1980s rock music, realistic graphics and surrealistic scenes together with illustrations similar to comics. Almost all the film was made by means of animation, except for a short segment at the end of the film which shows the documented results of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in a news archive footage. The film belongs to a rare genre called "animated documentary". It entered the competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, and received wide critical acclaim at its premiere, however lost in competition for the prizes despite predictions made during the festival week.
