Why Australian Men Pay for It (2004) An extraordinarily candid documentary, it features interviews with a diverse group of men who explain why they visit prostitutes. Every year 12 million visits are made to brothels by Australian men - but who are these punters and why do they do it? This film by producer-director Don Parham lifts the covers on this everyday secret. His diverse subjects talk frankly about paying for sex, and their candour is, at times, breathtaking. Their stories have the capacity to make you laugh, cry, and perhaps even get angry. Parham, 50, believes his approach is probably a world first. Not because it provides a rare male perspective on the issue but because its subjects are named, identified and remarkably frank. "To get guys to talk on camera is extraordinary," he says. "(UK network) Channel 4 did the same subject a few years back but blacked out the faces."Parham's subjects are far from reticent. Rosco, 25, is an aspiring Casanova who likes singing, karaoke clubs and having sex with prostitutes. He lost his virginity at a brothel and is now a regular visitor. Rosco giggles with embarrassment when he admits the sex worker who made a man of him looked like "an Asian version" of his mother. We don't have to imagine what his mother looks like because she is sitting right next to her son on the sofa of their suburban Melbourne home. Mark, 35, a safety officer at a small chemical company, likes the variety of women on offer. Matthew, 47, is a recently separated IT manager who fell in love with a prostitute and Carl is a lonely divorcee who smiles shyly when he talks about the "frequent blower points" he's clocking up at his local bordello. Arthur, 48, gets his kicks having sex with street prostitutes. Richard, 70, is still fond of his wife but hasn't had sex with her for 20 years. He puts a bit of his pension away each week until he can afford some "rough and tumble"."They're (prostitutes) giving a service," Richard says, staring into the camera without a trace of embarrassment."I'm paying for it. That's all." The film punctuates its interviews with statistics drawn from The Australian Study of Health and Relationships. A groundbreaking survey of 10,000 men published last year, it revealed that one in six Australian men had visited a prostitute at least once in his lifetime.
